Hong Kong, 24 June 2024 - Belt and Road Pioneer (BRP) successfully organized an Introduction Seminar and Commencement Ceremony for the "Silk Road Exploration Into Cambodia" at the Fung-Ming-Hall at Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple on the evening of 24 June 2024. The seminar aimed to acquaint participants with outbound arrangements and requirements, provide historical background and insights into the development of the initiative, highlight the opportunities presented by the "Belt and Road Initiative", promote Chinese culture, and encourage participants to embrace their roles as ambassadors.

Through inter-school competitions and post-competition winning team study trips, the BRP has embarked on several trips to Southeast Asian regions that were radiated by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in the previous 7 years. This year, the “My Interfaces with the Belt and Road” competition was successfully held in April. A team of over 30 participants, including the winning students (“Belt and Road Pioneer Ambassadors”) and teachers, led by Dr. Wilson CHAN, Chairman of BRP, along with professors (including Professor Terence CHONG and Professor Linda Chelan LI), and mentors will visit Cambodia for a delegation trip. This expedition followed the team's previous successful visit to other Southeast Asian countries, namely Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

In the ceremony, Bernard CHAN, Honorary President of the "Belt and Road Pioneer", emphasized the significance of Cambodia's proximity and strong ties with China, despite its modest size within ASEAN. Reflecting on the opportunities presented by the Cambodian market, he stated, "Everyone who goes to Cambodia this time can understand the development opportunities of this market".

Prof. Herman HU, Honorary Chairman of the "Belt and Road Pioneer”, highlighted Cambodia's status as an ancient civilization in Indochina and the fastest-growing economy in Southeast Asia. He noted, “The country's GDP is projected to reach 35.1 billion US dollars in 2024, with a growth rate of approximately 6.6% with an immense potential for development, making this expedition a rare opportunity for exploration for the students. I anticipate the students to focus on aspects such as the local economy, agriculture, and Cambodia's relationship with Hong Kong and encourage them to share their findings upon their return.”

Mr. CHAN Yung, a representative of the National People's Congress and Legislative Council member from the Hong Kong SAR, commended the longstanding friendly relationship between Hong Kong and Cambodia. He expressed his belief that the Silk Road journey would further deepen cooperation and understanding between the two regions. CHAN encouraged the participants, stating, " 'Reaching Out to the World while Rooted in Hong Kong and Backed by Motherland.’ I hope students can learn more during this trip and bring back these experiences to Hong Kong to make greater contributions to our society and country."

The "Silk Road Exploration into Cambodia'' is scheduled to take place from June 29 to July 4, 2024. The participants will have the opportunity to explore various significant landmarks in Phnom Penh, including Xi Jinping Boulevard, Phnom Penh's Night Market, Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, Royal Palace, and the under-construction Techo International Airport. Additionally, visits to prominent businesses and institutions, such as Chinese enterprises, Hong Kong enterprises and foreign enterprises, ie. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Limited (Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia), Sun Wah Group, Goldfame Group, and EY Office, are planned. Participants will gain insights into government work by engaging with Cambodia's Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) and Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction (MLMUPC), as well as Hong Kong's Economic and Trade Office in the region. Lastly, interactions with local universities and the first Confucius Institute will offer a deeper understanding of the friendly cooperation between China and Cambodia, while exploring local culture, economic development, and social progress.
